SUMMARY:ESSEN, GERMANY – SHEKU – ORCHESTRAL
DESCRIPTION:PERFORMERS\nSheku Kanneh-Mason, cello\nLondon Philharmonic Orchestra\nEdward Gardner, conductor\nPROGRAMME\nBloch: “Schelomo” – Hebrew Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra\nVENUE NOTE\n“I consider Elgar’s Symphony a masterpiece of the first order, one that will soon be cited alongside the great symphonic models of Beethoven and Brahms,” once enthused conductor Arthur Nikisch, even dubbing it “Brahms’ Fifth.” Yet, German classical music fans today generally associate the British late Romantic composer Edward Elgar only with the “Enigma Variations,” his Cello Concerto, or the patriotic “Pomp & Circumstance” marches. His masterful First Symphony remains to be discovered—and the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its chief conductor Edward Gardner offer the opportunity to do so here. Also on the program: Elgar’s Italian-inspired concert overture “In the South” and Ernest Bloch’s popular “Schelomo” Rhapsody, played by British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason.\n
